The word enamel comes from the High German word “smelzan” and later from the Old French “esmail”.The English Dictionary defines enamel as ” a colored glassy substance, transparent or opaque, fused to the surface of articles made of metal, glass etc. for ornament or protection”.
The ancient Egyptians adapted enamels to pottery and stone objects, and sometimes jewelry, though the last less often than other ancient Middle Eastern cultures. Enamel can also be applied to copper, aluminium, stainless steel,cast iron or hot rolled steel, as well as gold and silver.
Enamel is usually used in Indian jewelry but can be found it some exotic pieces also. which has different or sometimes the same color enamel they are also called as meenakari jewelry. it can be found in black, red, green, white and many other colors it is very shiny n Neva loosed its appearance. but the enamel jewelry when bought could be expensive but has lesser value when sold. It is usually done in silver and gold.
For jewelry industry, we can define enameling as a technique of adding color to a piece of jewelry. Enamel basically is a finely grounded glass.
